Jaxon Records – History

Jaxon Records studio in Jackson, TNJackson, Tennessee is located in the heart of the Mid-South, halfway between Memphis to the west, with its deep roots in rock and roll and blues music, and to the east, Nashville, the country music capital of the world. In the mid 1950’s there was a new music sound that was starting to be heard and would have an everlasting effect on the world of music.  This music blended blues, gospel, and rock and roll that was being recorded in Memphis, and the country music that as coming out the Nashville all into one.  The name give to this music was “Rockabilly.”

 

A young man from Jackson wrote and recorded a song, “Blue Suede Shoes”, which was released in 1956 on the Sun Record label, and became the anthem for this new “Rockabilly” music.  His name was Carl Perkins, and he became “The King of Rockabilly”.  Carl was inducted into the Rock and Roll, the Rockabilly, and the Nashville Songwriters Hall of Fame, and was a Grammy Hall of Fame Award recipient.  Following Carl Perkins came another young guy from Jackson, Carl Mann, with a Top Ten “Rockabilly” record entitled “Mona Lisa”.  Other notable “Rockabilly” artists from Jackson that came u through that era include Kenny Parchman and Rayburn Anthony, who also recorded for the Sun Record label, and W.S. “Fluke” Holland, drummer for Johnny Cash’s band, “The Tennessee Three”.  Jackson also has been home to blues artists, Sonny Boy Williamson, harmonica artist Big Maybell, gospel blues artist Arthur Adams, R&B artist Big Joe Turner, and is now home to the great Denise Lasalle.
